Case: TERWA
TERWA phone cases are made from Nordic birch, treated with traditional tar – the surface darkens and seals up, making it naturally resistant to water and dirt. The finish isn’t sticky or staining; it just feels like real wood. Because it is. Engrave your own text, logo, dog. anything, and admire the live preview. Carry something with roots.

How to order: this product is made to order from your choices. Make your selections on the product page – phone brand and model, material and, if you like, engraving, MagSafe and add-ons. Without these selections the order can’t be made.
TERWA – wooden tar birch phone cases & covers
iPhone, Samsung, OnePlus, Pixel, Realme – dark brown, engravable
The campfire has smoldered through the night. Mist rises from the lake, the coffee pot starts to hiss, and the air has that smoky, resinous scent you won’t find in the perfume aisle. TERWA is a handcrafted wooden phone case made from tar birch – dark brown and genuine, and it smells exactly like that morning. You pick up your phone about 56 times a day; here’s a case that gives those moments something extra. The wood grain lives on the surface like growth rings on a stump, and no two are the same. Fits iPhone 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, Samsung Galaxy, OnePlus, Google Pixel and Realme models. Add MagSafe or engrave a name and create your own TERWA case.
In the northern forests, tar pits smoked for weeks, tar boats came down the river to Oulu, and the whole city carried the scent. The same substance helped hold sailing ship ropes together across the Atlantic. Lastu was born in that city. TERWA is that heritage in modern form: a phone case treated with the same stuff – just on a slightly smaller scale.
Material: tar birch – smoke and grain
Tone & surface
Tar birch
- Tar birch – dark brown like a coffee pot that’s been by the fire, with the grain showing through. Every wooden phone case is a unique piece.
- The tar treatment repels water splashes – no stickiness, no staining your hands. Morning dew, a rain shower and fishy hands won’t bother it. Swimming will.
- A subtle, genuine tar scent, not a fragrance. Strongest during the first weeks – that’s when it takes you to a smoke sauna bench and a September lakeside rock – then settles into something only you know is there.
If you’re looking for brown phone cases and don’t want faux leather, this is the real alternative. Want to compare? See all wooden phone cases →
Structure and protection
+ Textured edge profile – the tar surface adds natural grip. The wooden phone case stays firmly in your hand and won’t slip.
+ Raised edge protects the screen – you can place your phone on a table without the screen touching it. Drop protection test →
+ Raised camera frame – the lens stays lifted, not in table dust. The camera stays clear.
+ Slim and light. Birch is naturally lighter than most plastic phone cases – no unnecessary bulk.
+ MagSafe-compatible option available – wireless charging and magnetic accessories work at full power. MagSafe vs regular cases →
+ Engraving – moose, coordinates, symbol, Finnish lion or a name. The live preview shows the result before you order. See the design guide →
Not from stock. Nordic, made to order.
The tar pits smoked. The scent stayed.
Every TERWA phone case is made to order in Finland from Nordic birch. Tar repels water splashes, doesn’t get sticky and won’t stain your hands. No stock cases, no mass production – and no, we didn’t invent tar ourselves: it has been boiled around here for hundreds of years, we’re just continuing the story. See how the cases are made in Finland →
Tar Subtle natural scent – smoke, conifer and the morning after a campfire. No stickiness, no staining your hands. Naturally repels water splashes.
MagSafe Available for all phone models on the product page. Do you need a MagSafe case?
Engraving Moose, mountain scenery, fishing spot coordinates, a logo or a name. Shown in black in the preview – on the finished wooden phone case, it appears as birch’s own light tone against the dark tar surface.

Frequently asked questions
Does the TERWA case smell of tar, and does the tar rub off?
The case has a subtle scent of pine tar and smoke, strongest when it's new. The surface is finished, so the tar doesn't stain hands, pockets or your phone, and the case isn't sticky.
Why can't I add a colour image to TERWA?
The dark tarred surface doesn't reproduce printed colours reliably, so TERWA is engraving-only. Engravings show as a light, warm line on the dark brown base – names, logos and coordinates stand out well.
For a colour image, choose the light LUMI.
What's the difference between TERWA and KELO?
Both are tar-treated birch. TERWA is dark brown with strong contrast; KELO is greyish and more muted. Engravings stand out slightly more clearly on dark TERWA.
Can a tarred wooden case handle rain and hiking?
The surface repels water and dirt, so rain, dew or splashes are fine – just wipe the case dry. It isn't waterproof, though, so it won't survive swimming or submersion. The wood develops a patina with use, and every case ages in its own way.
When does my TERWA case ship and how do I know it's on its way?
Your case is made to order in 2–6 working days and then takes 2–4 working days to arrive. Free shipping is an untracked letter – choose tracked shipping at checkout if you want a tracking code.
You'll get an email when the case leaves our workshop. If the letter hasn't arrived 10 working days after that email, contact us and we'll send a new one.
Can I add MagSafe and a LEKA screen protector to TERWA?
Yes. MagSafe (+€5) is fitted into the case during production, and the LEKA screen protector is cut for the same phone model you choose for the case. LEKA isn't made for models with screens that curve over the edges.
