Lastu in Oulu – from Åström’s Tannery to the heart of modern technology
Lastu designs, manufactures, assembles, and ships its products from Oulu, at Nahkatehtaankatu 2 — the historic Åström tannery on the edge of Ainola Park.
Local Lastu operates at Nahkatehtaankatu 2, in Myllytulli. Our premises are located in the handsome red-brick building of the Åström tannery, right between the Oulu Art Museum and Tietomaa, next to Ainola Park. It’s a rare and beautiful continuation that a now-closed tannery is where modern technology products are made — phone cases, Lastu cases, phone cases, and cases.
Historic factory setting, modern twist
Åström’s tannery was one of the most significant industrial facilities of its time. Leather was tanned there, and products were made for markets around the world. Now, within the same walls, tradition meets the present: material-led design meets mobile technology. Lastu has been making products in Oulu since 2011, where the aesthetics and practicality of Nordic nature are visible in every detail.
We see the building’s story as a kind of transformation: the former tannery continues as a home for craftsmanship and industrial expertise, but with a more modern twist. In this setting, phone cases, cases, and lighter protective cases are born — products designed to work seamlessly with today’s devices.
Ainolanpuisto – nature, light and flowing water as a photo setting
Most of Lastu’s product photos are shot next door in Ainolanpuisto. The park’s white bridges, freely flowing water and changing seasons add depth to the visual story of our products. In autumn, the gold and red of the leaves highlight the grain of the wood material and give the images a warm, Oulu-style feel.
