Lastu and responsibility
Sustainability is not a campaign for us
Lastu has been handcrafting phone cases in Northern Finland since 2011. Every material choice, production decision, and logistics solution is made to keep the environmental impact as small as possible — not because it looks good, but because making to order is the only way this company works.

Why is a Lastu phone case a more sustainable choice?
Because it is not made for stock and it is not meant to be thrown away. The phone case is made only after you order it, for your exact phone model, from responsibly sourced materials in the Nordics using renewable energy. The packaging is recyclable material, the product has a 180-day warranty, and if the phone case wears out or you change phones, the worn surface can be refinished instead of you buying a new one.
What is a Lastu phone case made of?
We do not use print on top of plastic. Every material is the real deal, and each has a reason to be included.
FSC-certified birch
All wood comes from certified, responsibly managed forests. We do not use endangered wood species. The surface is finished non-toxically with several treatments that extend the product’s life cycle.
Wooden Case →Genuine camouflage fabric
M05, MM14, and Flecktarn are cut from real military fabric — not printed as a pattern. Durable, recognizable, and long-lasting material made to withstand far more than life in a pocket.
Camouflage patterns →Reindeer leather
A by-product from free-roaming reindeer in Lapland — material that is created anyway. Natural and culturally significant, and with use it develops a patina more beautiful than when new. Not currently in the selection.
Salmon leather
Leather refined from surplus from the fish industry. Recycling thinking in practice: the raw material would otherwise be waste, and the end result is up to four times stronger than cowhide. Not currently in the selection.
We don’t manufacture for stock
The biggest environmental issue in e-commerce isn’t shipping, but overproduction: products are made based on estimates, and what doesn’t sell is discounted or destroyed. Lastu doesn’t have that problem, because we don’t keep a stock of finished phone cases.
Each phone case is cut and crafted only after the order is placed, for the exact phone model and material selected. That’s why production takes 2–10 days — it’s the price of not making anything for nothing.
As a side benefit, material waste stays low: we only work with what the order requires.
Repair, don’t replace
A durable product is one you don’t have to buy again. In many cases, a worn wooden surface can be refinished, and a small bit of damage doesn’t mean the whole phone case is done for. If your case needs servicing, contact customer support before ordering a new one.
In Northern Finland, with renewable energy
- Our own workshop: all products are made in Northern Finland — no outsourcing to faraway countries.
- Renewable energy: production is based on Nordic renewable energy sources.
- Short supply chain: less transport, better quality control, and Nordic jobs.
- Responsible packaging: recycled and recyclable materials, with size and weight minimized without compromising protection.
What we do after the package leaves
The Ocean Cleanup
We support a project developing the collection of plastic waste from the oceans. Previously, support has gone to tree planting in Zambia and WWF’s Saimaa ringed seal work.
Ocean Cleanup →Packaging and shipping
The packaging is made from recyclable material and sized to fit the product: the smaller and lighter the package, the lower the transport load.
Ask about shipping →Honestly, also about what we are not
A phone case is a product you may not need to buy at all. For the environment, the best option is always the case you already have. But if you do buy one, choose one that lasts for years — not four cheap ones a year.
We also do not claim our production is emission-free. The laser cutter uses electricity, and packages travel by trucks and airplanes. We do what we can: produce to order, use renewable energy, and keep the supply chain short.
Lastu (Droplet Hitech Design Oy) operates in accordance with Finnish law, pays its taxes in Finland, and processes customer data in accordance with GDPR. Ask us anything — customer service will answer.
Frequently asked questions about sustainability
Is a wooden phone case really more eco-friendly than a plastic one?
It depends on its lifespan. Making a single phone case always uses energy, but wood is a renewable material, the phone case is made to order with no overproduction, and it is designed to last for years. Four cheap plastic cases a year is a heavier choice for the environment than one phone case that outlasts your phone.
Where does the wood used by Lastu come from?
From FSC-certified, responsibly managed Nordic forests. We do not use endangered wood species. Birch is a northern tree species that grows close to the workshop.
What energy is used to make the Case?
Production is based on Nordic renewable energy sources. However, we do not claim the production is emission-free: equipment uses electricity and transport creates emissions.
Can an old Lastu phone case be repaired?
In many cases, yes. A worn wood surface can be refinished. Contact customer service and tell us what is wrong with the phone case — products also come with a 180-day warranty against manufacturing defects.
Is the packaging plastic-free?
The packaging uses recycled and recyclable materials, and its size and weight are minimized without compromising product protection during transport.
