Lastu in Oulu – From Åström Leather Factory to the Heart of Modern Technology
Lastu designs, manufactures, assembles, and delivers its products from Oulu, at Nahkatehtaankatu 2 – the historic Åström leather factory, right by Ainolanpuisto.
Oulu-based Lastu operates at Nahkatehtaankatu 2 in Myllytulli. Our premises are in the impressive red-brick building of the Åström leather factory, right between the Oulu Art Museum and Tietomaa, next to Ainolanpuisto. It’s a rare and wonderful continuation that, in a former leather factory, products related to modern technology are now being created – phone cases, Lastu Case, phone cases, and Case.
Historic Factory Setting, Modern Twist
The Åström leather factory was one of the most significant industrial sites of its time. Leather was tanned there and products were made that traveled to markets around the world. Now, within these same walls, tradition and the present meet: material-driven design meets mobile technology. Lastu has been making products in Oulu since 2011, with the aesthetics and practicality of northern nature visible in every detail.
We see the story of the building as a kind of transformation: the former leather factory’s role continues as a home of craftsmanship and industrial skill, but with a more modern twist. In this environment, phone cases, Case, and also lighter protective cases are created – products designed to work seamlessly with today’s devices.
Ainolanpuisto – Nature, Light, and Flowing Water as a Backdrop
Most of Lastu’s product photos are taken in the neighboring Ainolanpuisto. The park’s white bridges, freely flowing water, and changing seasons add to the visual story of our products. In autumn, the gold and red of the leaves highlight the grain of the wood material and give the photos a warm, Oulu-like atmosphere.
Oulu – A Union of Technology and Design
Oulu’s strong technology ecosystem, Nokia’s legacy, and the expertise of the University of Oulu create an environment where it’s natural to develop new products.
