Lastu and Responsibility – a Sustainable Choice in Nordic Manufacturing
Sustainability isn’t a campaign for us
Lastu has been handcrafting phone cases in Oulu since 2011. Every material choice, production decision and logistics solution is made to keep the environmental impact as low as possible — not because it looks good, but because made-to-order is the only way this company works.

Why is a Lastu phone case a more sustainable choice?
Because it isn’t made for stock, and it isn’t meant to be thrown away. The Case is made only when you order it, for your exact phone model, from responsibly sourced materials in the Nordics using renewable energy. The delivery’s carbon footprint is automatically offset, the packaging is recyclable, and if the Case wears out or you change phones, it can be serviced or upgraded to a new model instead of buying a new one.
What a Lastu phone case is made of
We don’t use print on top of plastic. Every material is the real thing, and each one has a reason to be there.
FSC-certified birch
All wood comes from certified, responsibly managed forests. We do not use endangered wood species. The surface is finished non-toxically with multiple treatments that extend the product’s lifespan.
Wooden Case →Genuine camouflage fabric
M05, MM14 and Flecktarn are cut from real military fabric — not printed as a pattern. Durable, recognizable and long-lasting material, made to withstand a lot more than sitting in a pocket.
Camouflage patterns →Reindeer leather
A by-product of free-roaming reindeer in Lapland — material that is created anyway. Natural and culturally meaningful, it develops a patina with use that looks even better than new.
Salmon leather
Leather made from surplus from the fishing industry. Circular thinking in practice: the raw material would otherwise be waste, and the result is up to four times stronger than cowhide.
We don’t manufacture for stock
E-commerce’s biggest environmental problem isn’t delivery but overproduction: goods are made based on estimates, and whatever doesn’t sell is discounted or destroyed. Lastu doesn’t have that problem, because we don’t keep a stock of finished phone cases.
Every phone case is cut and machined only after the order is placed, specifically for the selected phone model and material. That’s why production takes 2–10 days — it’s the price of not making anything for no reason.
As a side benefit, material waste stays low: we only machine what the order requires.
Repair, don’t replace
A sustainable product is one you don’t need to buy again. That’s why you can send your Lastu phone case to our maintenance and upgrade service: a worn surface is refinished, and in many cases the back can be transferred to a new phone model when you switch phones.
In Oulu, powered by renewable energy
- Workshop in Oulu: all products are made in Northern Finland — no subcontracting far away.
- Renewable energy: production is powered by Nordic renewable energy sources.
- Short supply chain: less transport, better quality control, and Nordic jobs.
- Responsible packaging: recycled and recyclable materials, with size and weight minimized without compromising protection.
What we do after the package leaves
Carbon-neutral delivery
The carbon footprint of every order’s delivery is automatically offset through scientifically reviewed carbon sequestration projects. The customer doesn’t need to do anything extra.

We support a project developing the collection of plastic waste from the oceans, with the goal of removing half of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in five years.
Ocean Cleanup →Honest also about what we are not
A phone case is a product you don’t necessarily need to buy at all. For the environment, the best option is always the case you already have. But if you do buy one, choose one that lasts for years — not four cheap ones a year.
We also don’t claim our production is emission-free. The laser cutter uses electricity, and packages travel by trucks and planes. We do what we can: make to order, offset deliveries, and use renewable energy.
Lastu (Droplet Hitech Design Oy) operates in accordance with Finnish law, pays its taxes to Finland, and processes customer data in accordance with GDPR. Ask us anything — customer service will reply.
Frequently asked questions about responsibility
Is a wooden phone case actually more eco-friendly than a plastic one?
It depends on the lifespan. Making a single phone case always uses energy, but wood is a renewable material, the case is made to order with no overproduction, and it’s designed to last for years. Four cheap plastic cases a year are a heavier choice for the environment than one case that outlasts your phone.
Where does the wood come from?
From FSC-certified, responsibly managed forests. We don’t use endangered wood species. Birch is a Nordic wood species that grows near our workshop in Oulu.
What does carbon-neutral delivery mean in practice?
Emissions caused by delivery are calculated and offset by supporting scientifically assessed carbon capture projects. Offsetting happens automatically with every order at no extra cost to the customer.
Can an old Lastu phone case be repaired or upgraded?
Yes. In the maintenance and upgrade service, the worn surface is refinished, and in many cases the case can be upgraded to a new phone model. Products also include a 180-day warranty.
Is the packaging plastic-free?
We use recycled and recyclable materials for packaging, and minimize the package size and weight without compromising product protection during shipping.
One phone case that lasts
Choose the material, phone model, and, if you like, your own image or engraving. We make it by hand in Oulu — only after you order.
