Lastu and responsibility

Responsibility

Responsibility isn't a campaign for us

Lastu has been making phone cases by hand in Northern Finland since 2011. Every material choice, production decision and logistics solution is made to keep the environmental impact as low as possible — not because it looks good, but because made-to-order is the only way this company works.

Droplet Hitech Design Oy · Design From Finland · FSC-certified birch

Short answer

Why is a Lastu case the more sustainable choice?

Because it isn't made for stock, and it isn't meant to be thrown away. The case is made only once you order it, for your exact phone model, from responsibly sourced materials in Finland using renewable energy. The packaging is recyclable, the product carries a 180-day warranty, and if the surface wears down a worn case can often be refinished rather than replaced.

Materials

What a Lastu case is made of

We don't use print on top of plastic. Every material is the real thing, and each one has a reason to be there.

FSC-certified birch

All the wood comes from certified, responsibly managed forests. We do not use endangered wood species. The surface is finished non-toxically with several treatments that extend the product's life.

Genuine camouflage fabric

M05, MM14 and Flecktarn are cut from real military fabric — not printed as a pattern. Durable, recognisable and long-lasting material built to take far more than sitting in a pocket.

Camo cases →

Reindeer leather

A by-product of free-roaming reindeer in Lapland — a material that is created anyway. Natural, culturally meaningful and it develops a patina that looks better than new. Not currently in the range.

Salmon leather

Leather made from fishing-industry surplus. Circular thinking in practice: the raw material would otherwise be waste, and the result is up to four times stronger than cowhide. Not currently in the range.

📌 Materials you can order right now: birch in several shades, tarred birch, genuine military fabric, a carbon look and design prints. See the full material range →
Production

We don't manufacture for stock

E-commerce's biggest environmental problem isn't delivery but overproduction: goods are made on an estimate, and whatever doesn't sell is discounted or destroyed. Lastu doesn't have that problem, because we don't keep a stock of finished cases.

Every case is cut and machined only after the order is placed, for the exact phone model and material chosen. That is why production takes 2–10 days — it is the price of not making anything for no reason.

As a side effect, material waste stays low: we only machine what the order requires.

Lifecycle

Repair, don't replace

A sustainable product is one you don't have to buy again. A worn wooden surface can often be refinished, and small damage does not mean the whole case is lost. If your case needs attention, contact customer service before ordering a new one.

📌 180-day warranty. If a case has a manufacturing fault we repair or replace it — we don't ask you to buy a new one.
Manufacturing

In Northern Finland, on renewable energy

  • Our own workshop: everything is made in Northern Finland — no subcontracting far away.
  • Renewable energy: production runs on domestic renewable energy sources.
  • A short supply chain: less transport, better quality control and Finnish jobs.
  • Responsible packaging: recycled and recyclable material, size and weight minimised without compromising protection.
Delivery and support

What we do after the parcel leaves

The Ocean Cleanup

We support the project developing technology to collect plastic waste from the oceans. Earlier support went to tree planting in Zambia and to WWF's Saimaa ringed seal programme.

Packaging and transport

The packaging is recyclable and sized to the product: the smaller and lighter the parcel, the smaller the transport load.

Transparency

Honest about what we are not

A phone case is a product you may not need to buy at all. Environmentally, the best option is always the case you already have. If you do buy one, buy one that lasts years — not four cheap ones a year.

Nor do we claim our production is emission-free. A laser cutter uses electricity, and parcels travel on lorries and planes. We do what we can: we produce to order, use renewable energy and keep the supply chain short.

Lastu (Droplet Hitech Design Oy) operates under Finnish law, pays its taxes in Finland and handles customer data in line with the GDPR. Ask us anything — customer service answers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about responsibility

Is a wooden phone case really more environmentally friendly than a plastic one?

It depends on how long it lasts. Making any case uses energy, but wood is a renewable material, the case is made to order without overproduction, and it is designed to last years. Four cheap plastic cases a year is a heavier choice than one case that outlives the phone.

Where does the wood come from?

From FSC-certified, responsibly managed Nordic forests. We do not use endangered wood species. Birch is a northern species that grows close to the workshop.

What energy are the cases made with?

Production runs on domestic renewable energy sources. We do not claim production is emission-free, though: machines use electricity and transport produces emissions.

Can an old Lastu case be repaired?

In many cases yes. A worn wooden surface can be refinished. Contact customer service and describe the problem — products also carry a 180-day warranty against manufacturing faults.

Is the packaging plastic-free?

The packaging uses recycled and recyclable material, and its size and weight are minimised without compromising how well the product is protected in transit.

One case that lasts

Choose the material, the phone model and, if you like, your own image or engraving. We make it by hand in Northern Finland — only once you have ordered it.
